Natural Hair by Design

Hair restoration surgery has dramatically improved over the past decade and is currently the only long lasting solution for balding or thinning hair. We restore your hair and add density by using your own, natural, growing hair. Dr. Barr’s technique is the most advanced available today and is considered the gold standard in hair restoration. By using sophisticated harvesting methods at the back of the scalp, utilization of hair grafts is maximized and each restoration session produces optimal results.

Follicular Unit Grafts

Hair grows in clusters of 1-4 hairs, known as follicular units. In Dr. Barr’s hair restoration procedures, these small follicular units are removed from a donor area on the scalp and transplanted into areas of hair loss, in a procedure known as follicular unit transplantation. The use of follicular unit grafts is far superior to past methods in which large, obvious bundles of hair were implanted into the scalp. The benefit of follicular unit transplantation is that the follicular units are small, naturally occurring units and the hair restoration is so natural it cannot be detected.  Both density and volume are restored resulting in a more youthful appearance and renewed confidence.

Donor Hair

The hair growing on the sides and back of the head is permanent hair for most individuals. It is permanent in the sense that the follicles do not have a receptor and are therefore not sensitive to the hormone DHT. Hair restoration takes this permanent hair and redistributes it to regions of the scalp where hair is thinning or balding. The transplanted hair maintains its original growth characteristics even after transplanted to the previously bald area. It remains unaffected by the hormone DHT and therefore is not sensitive to the factors that caused hair loss in this region originally. In this way, the transplanted hair provides a permanent correction for the hair loss in this area.

The Side Effects

The side effects of hair restoration surgery are relatively minor and include mild discomfort after the operation, minimal swelling, slight tenderness at the donor sites and the formation of tiny scabs over the grafts which resolve within one week. A very small percentage of patients may experience brief shedding of a few hairs that were in the region that was transplanted.  If this occurs, it usually affects only a small amount of the original hairs and occurs within 1 to 4 months post transplant.  It is referred to as “shock.” This is due to temporary changes in circulation as a result of the surgery. These hairs always grow back. Hair restoration with Dr. Barr is comfortable, predictable and satisfying.
